Halloween isn't just a festival where children dress up to collect candy.
Its history dates back over 2,000 years, to the ancient Celtic celebrations of Samhain.
For the Celts of Ireland and Scotland, October 31st marked the end of the year and the arrival of winter, a time of transition when they believed that the veil between the world of the living and that of the dead was particularly thin. Spirits could then return among the living. To ward them off, the Celts lit bonfires, wore scary costumes and made offerings of food.
With the rise of Christianity in Europe, the Church tried to replace these pagan rituals by introducing All Hallows' Day on November 1 to honor all saints.
All Hallows' Eve became Halloween.
The holiday then migrated to America in the 19th century, with Irish and Scottish settlers bringing these traditions with them. Halloween thus took root in the United States, and the cultural transformation began.
Carved pumpkins replaced carved turnips, costumes and decorations became icons of the holiday, and the famous candy hunt - a tradition inspired by medieval practices where people went from house to house asking for food in exchange for prayers - became uncontested.
Halloween around the world
Although Halloween is mainly associated with Anglo-Saxon culture, it is now celebrated in many countries around the world. In France, Halloween was popularized in the 1990s.
It's a blend of ancient pagan beliefs, Christian rituals and festivities that combine folklore, superstition and entertainment, while retaining a hint of mystery and magic.
Whether in the streets illuminated by pumpkin lanterns or in front of horror films, Halloween continues to fascinate, reminding us every year that, even for one night, the imaginary and the frightening can intertwine to create a unique and unforgettable experience.
